Budgie Behaviour

Question
I have 2 budgies, one male one female. Recently the female has started sleeping on the bottom of the cage. She's never done this before. Is this normal?

Answer
Generally, no.  Normally sitting or sleeping on the bottom of the cage can be a sign of illness or injury, or in females it can signal eggbinding.  Can she physically not stay on the perch?  Does she have other signs of being sick?

*Unusual droppings (looser or firmer than normal, runny, or just plain weird)
*Reduced appetite (budgies have a high metabolism, so not eating as much can be a sign something is wrong)
*Ruffled feathers (often a way to conceal weight loss and weakness from predators)
*Difficulty breathing (breathing through mouth, wheezing, etc.)
*Squinty or oozing eyes
*Refusal to perch

I would call your local avian vet.  Usually, if a bird can't or won't perch, there's something wrong.  Better safe than sorry.

Good luck!
