Question
i have a cokateil who is about two now she has started laying eggs which are not fertilizd becasue she is by herself and we have never had a male cokateil. she has become very agressive. what shall we do witht the eggs and why is she laying them?

Answer
Hello Katie and thank you for your post.
It is normal for a female to lay eggs without a male present, and this is the time of year for egg laying and breeding.  The best that you can do for her is to let her sit on her eggs until SHE is ready to stop sitting on them.  She will be aggressive to protect her eggs, as this is a natural instinct.  If you take her eggs away too soon, she will continue to lay more and this could run into health problems for her.
When her mothering instincts are satisfied, she will either push them out of the way or quit sitting on them all toghether.  That is the time that it is safe to take tham out of the cage and throw them away.
Be sure that you have a calcium block in her cage, as egg laying take alot of calcium out of her body.  Also, put a couple of drops of Vitamin "E" oil in her food or water.  This will help to keep her vent moistened enough for her to pass the eggs and reduce the risk of getting egg bound, which is a condition that can turn fatal very quickly.

Good luck and God Bless.
