Question
I have a bird that was just brought in to the police station where I work.  The bird is obviously injured, looks like something got a hold of her and her tail feathers are mostly missing.  In between her wings is a scab about the size of a dime.  The bird is eating and drinking and nibbling on my earings as I am typing this.  This is the absolute sweetest bird I have ever come into contact with.  Ok so my question is kinda 2 parts, one, how can I clean the wound without hurting the bird. And I have a male at home and I am not sure if I should introduce them? I don't want to make my male jealous, but he may just like having a mate.  Very confused, I am a new bird owner (only about 6 mos)  Please help me if you can. This little female loves being held and patted, I already love her (which is tough because if somebody calls in a missing bird I will have to give it back)

Answer
Hello Cindy and thank you for your post.
You will probably have to take her in to a Certified Avian or Exotic Animal Vet to have the scab looked at and treated.  As for the tail feathers, they will grow back, so that's not a concern.
If you take her home, you will have to quarantine from your otther bird for qt least 30 days.  This way, if she has a parasite or disease, it doesn't get transferred to your other bird.  It will also help to get the bird aquainted before seeing each other face to face.  They will call out to each other quite a bit, and they will be more apt to accept each other when they do come face to face.
I know what you mean about her being the sweetest bird.  I have a Cockatiel that was badly abused before I got him, and he is the swettest bird that I have ever seen (and I have had a lot of rescues come into my home).  He loves to have his head scratched and he'll sit on my shoulder for hours on end.

Good luck and God Bless.
Dianna
Hopefully nobody will claim her
