Question
My 6 month old lutino cockatiel until recently only flew backwards when he attempted to fly. Since his first molt he has made some feeble attempts at flying forward. Will he ever fly properly? He was wing-clipped when young and slightly feather-plucked in the nest: contributing factors???

Answer
Sue,

First, I'm sorry that it took me so long to answer your question.  I had a series of family issues which took me away from the computer for a while.

It is possible that your cockatiel never learned to fly properly.  Flying, however, is instinctual, and your cockatiel (once the wing feathers grow in completely) will learn to fly if that is what you wish for.  Remember, when your cockatiel begins to fly, it only causes more dangerous issues, such as crashing into windows or mirrors.

Good luck,

Cindy
