Question
Hey Chrys, again!
Thank you so mush for the response! Sorry, I sent you some comments that asked some questions in them, so I'll just ask you the questions here. Anyway, I'll trust you, and take my bird to and avian vet, sadly, none of them are close to my town. Still, I'll cover up the cage with a blanket, and ride to the nearest one. About the all-seed diet, just want to know what kinds of fruits or other foods I can feed him.  P.S- I'm extreamly confused, yesterday, his feces were wet, but now, today, they're gray and solid, and the ones yesterday, now that they are dryed up, they leave this pink substance at the bottom of the cage!?!?!?

         Thanks again, Joey

Hey, well, about half a month ago, I sent in a post to Dianna subject- Sick Parakett-Please Help! Then, my parakeet's feces were having a grayish color. Dianna said that I should go to a vet, but doing that would leteraly scare my bird to death.. :( Anyway, now his feces are extreamly wet and have bearly any solid part in it. Here is some following info to help out-
- sick one is about 3 1/2
- there is a 4 year old (I don't really know the gender for both of them, but I believe they're both males) parakeet with him
-they've been on the same diet their whole lives
-as far as I know, he's eating

Tell me if you need any more info...please do ask me if you need info          Joey

Hi, Joey.  Thanks for posting!

If your bird is sick, the bird needs to be seen by an avian veterinarian.  If you don't take this bird in for a medical evaluation by an avian vet, it could possibly pass away, so you have a choice.  Either get your bird to a bird vet to find out what's ailing it or take the chance of your bird dying at home.

With that said, grayish droppings can indicate a medical problem.  Watery droppings can mean your bird is taking in more water than it should or is eating foods that are primarily water (such as fruit) or could mean your bird is ill.  A poor diet could be the problem here (such as an all-seed diet).  Birds hide signs of illness until they can't hide these signs any longer.  When we notice our birds are ill, it's usually too late to help them, but we should still try.  This means a bird will try to behave as normally as possible until it can't any longer.

You say yourself above the bird is sick.  You'd know this better than anyone else since you are with your birds 24/7.  You need to get this bird to an avian veterinarian ASAP, even if you think your bird will be scared to death.  Every bird that goes to the birdie vet is scared, but they still have to go if they are sick or suspected to be sick.

Answer
Hi again, Joey.

One thing you need to know is that what goes in the front of a bird (what a bird eats/drinks), is directly related to what comes out the back (what a bird poops out).  Therefore, if a bird is eating something watery and red, his poop in a few hours will be watery and red (or pinkish).  So, it could be that your bird doesn't have diarrhea at all and could be just what the bird is eating.

My keets love cooked brown rice with shredded veggies mixed in (peas, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, etc.).  They also love corn bread, multigrain/wholegrain dry, sugarless cereals/breads, pasta (no sauce), etc., etc.  The list can be endless!  Just remember that birds won't eat anything they don't recognize as food, so you may have to keep offering the new foods every day until one day the bird will try the food.  Sometimes it helps if your bird sees you eating the food.  Then it knows it is something to eat and not something to play with.  Some keets aren't really into fruits, although I often shred apples, pears, etc., into the cooked rice mix.

I still think you might want to consider taking your bird to the birdie vet in order to see if your bird is sick.  A poor diet can cause many health problems in birds.  Once you have a clean bill of health from the bird vet, you can start your bird on a better diet.
