Question
Hi,
I have a female Cockatiel about 3 years old, but she's only been in my care for a month. i am a first time bird owner so i recieved a care manual and have been trying my best. Lucy hurt her wing a little over 2 weeks ago but it seemed to be just the tip and not bothering her and after a day she didnt favor it or anything. but now there are long pink stick-like things protruding out from it and i dont know if they are bones, feathers or what. she's delicate with it and cant really fly but i dont know what to do to make it better. Please help me im really scared she's seriously hurt

Answer
Lexie,

Those are called "blood feathers" and they are very delicate.  Although they are covered with a thick keratin sheath, if one breaks it is like opening a vein.  So, be careful with her.  Eventually, the blood in the feather recedes back into the body as the feather starts to unfold.  At that point, the keratin sheath will begin to disintegrate and will look like she has dandruff!

Good luck,

Cindy
