injured cere on young parakeet

Question
Hello Roger,
I have a young parakeet, about 9 months old. I got him when he was about 4 months old and initially I let him fly free. He bumped the windows a number of times and his cere did get some bruising, but he seemed to weather it all alright and seemed to learn to avoid the windows. But then recently he crashed big time and suffered a concussion from hitting either the wall or window. He made a full recovery within two weeks, but his cere remained  bruised/discolored looking with a little bit of cracking. Today I was going to let him out for a little bit and he flew straight into the window. Now, besides the discoloration I mention above, his cere has one area deeply discolored with some hairline cracking. I will NOT let him fly free again without taking proper measures first(trimmed flight feathers). My question: with this kind of injury to the cere will it eventually heal to its original state or is the damage/discoloration permanent?
On a side note, his behavior, eating, drinking, and eliminating is all normal. He is continuing to let me massage his head, neck and cheeks as well as stroke his chest, belly and feet.
Thank you very much,
Eva
PS-
If you have any creative indoor cage ideas for parakeets that allow them to "fly" and get exercise I sure would appreciate it. I would love to rig something up where Mr. Bird could have as much freedom as possible.

Answer
As long as he is breathing ok, he should recover and the cere should go back to normal eventually. Only cage idea I have is to get or make a big one. They like to fly so the bigger you can create, the better. They don't like to have their wings clipped. If you do trim them, take a little bit off at first so he can fly but not fast.
