Parakeet Accident

Question
I have a parakeet. I'm not sure how old she is, but I bought her from a local Petco about a year ago. I've never taken my birds to the vet, and sometimes let them fly around the house when no one is home for exercise. The other day, when I came home, I  found one of my birds in my (UNPLUGGED, NOT HOT) deep fryer. She was covered in vegetable oil. For some reason, all of my birds are petrified of both my husband and I. She couldn't breath and was having a hard time walking. I put her in the cage, with fresh food and water. I let her relax a little bit, thinking too much might frighten her to death. After 15-20 minutes, I took her in the bathroom, and tried to wash her with warm water and a small small small amount of dawn dish soap. I tried my best to get it off, but she was still sticky with oil. It's been 5 days now. She's been eating/drinking/playing fine, and her wings are looking better. However, today, I found her lying down in the food bowl. Now she wont get up, can't open her eyes, and is breathing hard. I don't have money right now to take her to a vet...any advice???

Answer
Hi again, Lacie,

Thanks, but not a fair rating in politeness.  I was not being inpolite.  You asked me questions and I answered truthfully.  I'm sorry you didn't like the answer, but the truth is the truth.

Hi, Lacie,

This is why birds should not be allowed free roam UNSUPERVISED in our homes.  There are many dangers for them lurking about in our homes.

Your bird needs to be seen by a certified avian vet ASAP.  The oil could have penetrated the skin and is affecting her internally.  Her respiratory system may be affected, etc.  The hard breathing is a sign of respiratory distress.  None of us have the money to visit the vet, but your bird needs to see one ASAP.  Ask if you can make payment arrangements or see if someone can loan you the money.  If not, your bird may not survive.
