Question
I am planning a move to St. Louis from the Chicago area, and am wondering if there's anything I can do to minimize the stress of a 5 hour car ride on my three birds(one cockatiel and two parakeets). Also, should I transport them in cages that are covered with dropcloths? And is there any medication that could safely sedate them during the trip?

Answer
Kathy,

Thanks for being so considerate of your birds during this trip!

1) Make sure they are in a place in the car which is not in direct sunlight.  You can buy baby shades for your windows which will prevent that.

2) Make sure they are in a place in the car where the air conditioning vent is not blowing directly at them.

3) Tie down anything in the cage which sways.  Toys which move about in the cage while driving can strike and hurt or frighten a bird.

4) If you use cups for their food and water, only fill them halfway, and refresh the water often.

5) Use dark covers that prevent light from shining into the cage if you are driving at night, and cover the cage fully.  Birds can become frightened by the glare of headlights.  During the day, lift the covers off part of the cage so that they can enjoy the light and your company.

Good luck in your move!
