Supposed male parakeet laying eggs

Question
My fiancee wants to know if a male parakeet can lay an egg.  Her family has a supposed male parakeet that all of the sudden started laying eggs.  Is this possible or is the male actually a female?

Answer
Hi, Kevin.  Thanks for posting!

Males can't lay eggs...the bird is female!  Single female birds often lay infertile eggs without a male being present.  Her hormones running rampant are causing her to lay.  She will most likely lay up to 6 eggs.  Just leave them where she lays them until she abandons them on her own, and then you can remove and destroy the eggs.  If you remove them as they are laid, she will continue to lay and lay and lay, which would not be healthy for her.
