Question
Hello!

I have five budgies. Their diet consists of mainly seed, millet and occasional fruits and greens. I know an all seed diet is poor and i need to know what to replace it with. 2 of them are breeding now and is there anything specific i should be feeding them? they also have a cuttlebone.(if you dont know about the breeding ones that is fine) I just need help on getting them on a healthy diet.

                        Thank You

Answer
Hello,

I would not recommend allowing your birds to breed until they are on a healthy diet. Poor nutrition can easily cause the female to become egg bound, a potentially deadly condition. Please have your birds examined by an avian veterinarian before breeding to evaluate their overall health a discuss their specific nutritional needs.

A healthy diet for budgies consists of pellets, fresh fruits and veggies and a limited amount of seed. The key is that they are actually eating the pellets and variety of produce. That can be the tricky part.

This is a good website to go to for nutritional articles. I'm sorry, the links doesn't work quite right. Once you are at the site click "Avian" at the top and then "20 Nutritional Facts" on the left.
