Wounded wild pigeon was munched on by my dog

Question
It is 4am and I just pulled a wild pigeon out of my recently adopted dog's mouth. It has big gaps in wing feathers and looks totally defeathered on its underside. It has a small wound on its lower hind area. When it opens its wings it seems to have a full range of motion but not I'm not sure it can fly. Actually I'm pretty sure it can't.
The dog didn't get to munch for long but it doesn't take long to pull out a lot of feathers or damage the ones attached. I've wrapped the bird in a nice warm sweater and put it next to a dish of water. It seems calm now that its not being handled or munched on. Please let me know what I can do to help it. Those are some pretty significant feathers it is missing. Will they grow back?

What do I do?

Thank you.
Nina

Answer
Not being able to see the pigeon, I can't tell you exactly what to do but there is a risk of infection with the wound and if it can't fly, there may be some muscle damage. You can go to www.ornithology.com/rehab.html for links to bird rehabilitation sites which will give you information on helping a injured bird, but only a vet can help it if it is seriously wounded. The feathers that were lost will eventually grow back. Thanks for your concern for the bird.
