I heard that reptiles stop eating if they are exposed to light all of the time and i think that is the case with my snake. If this is so what should i do to correct this ive tried having him in no light for a period of time and this hasnt helped anything... the snake is a ball python

Answer
Hello Lester,

There are other reasons also why reptiles change their diet.  Such as:

Changes in the environment, changes in the seasons, anything that might be stressing the reptile and many other things.

Snakes aren't required to have a lighting source because they get their nutrients and vitamins from their food.

However, the lighting is another heating source for them and if the temperature isn't meeting its requirements the heating lamps are helpful..

The best way is to have the light on during the day for about 6-8 hours and the heat mat on 24/7.

The heat mats help keep their bellies warm and it's best to have a temperature control on them that way it won't burn them.

For me, instead of putting the heat mat outside of the tank I keep it inside of the tank that way I don't have to worry about it getting to hot because the heat mat then transfers the heat to most of the bottom of the cage.

If you don't have a heat mat I'd recommend getting one that fits the tank.  On the back of the box it tells you how much gallons the heat mat is:)  But they are pricey and it's not required to get a heat mat that suits the tank you can get one smaller then the gallons of your tank:)

For the lighting of the cage the temperature should be on one side about 80-85 Fahrenheit and at the other around 70-75 Fahrenheit.

What kind of substrate is your python using?

Also what kind of bulb and watts is your bulb and how big is your tank?

I hope this helps if not feel free to ask any concerns or questions you have:)
