Question
hi, we were given a rosy boa about a year ago. at first she seemed very docile although not too social.  she'd always go down your shirt or under your legs to hide. she's my daughter's snake whose great with animals and was very excited about her. about a month after getting her she went down a's shirt and bit her repeatedly on the back.  since then she's seemed to get more and more aggressive to the point where we don't handle her anymore (bites don't hurt as much as my cat scratches but it's a little unnerving)she acts as if she'll strike when you approach the cage.  funy cuz her head's so tiny and she's got no teeth to speak of but serious attitude. aren't rosies supposed to be docile, even friendly?  she also stopped eating frozen around that time. refused food for over 8 wks, then ate live when we got desperate.  since then she's fluctuated in refusing/accepting frozen mice, with no discernable pattern (time of day, season etc). now she seems to be hibernating but she didn't eat before this, has refused several f. mice (my pet store hasn't had any live fuzzies for a while).  i read the other post on bromulating rosy who hadn't eaten.  should itrust her instincts, will she be okay, should i keep offering mice?  how long will bromuation last.  i don't remember it being so  noticeable last year , she seemed more active.  we're also thinking of selling her now because it seems we can't handle her and (i'm naive on this point) we don't know if she's healthy/happy.  we do adore her and i don't want to do the wrong thing for her, but maybe someone else would know how to care for her better.  if we do rehome her should we wait for her active season?  thanks, l.

Answer
Goodness that is bad. Yes Rosys are usually pretty docile and a good beginner snake for kids. There is the oddball occasionally I guess.

It might be a good idea to find her a new home though. I would imagine that your daughter isn't feeling too kindly towards her now. See if you can find someone who really knows snakes, or find a rescue. I would wait until she is more active, as the brumation period for snakes varies. Ask your local reptile shop and they might have someone they know.
