i dont know what my snake is

i just bought a snake and was unsure if it is a boa or apython also how do i tell if it male or female

I could not tell you either. I would need to see a picture of it. There are a couple ways to sex a snake. The first is using a probe, the second one is what is called popping. This technique is best for young snakes, its a little harder on older snakes.
