Big Burm not sticking tongue out

Question

Monte in His cage
I have 18 snakes including two 10 foot Burmese pythons, one of them normal male and one albino female.  My 10 foot normal male is about 4-5 years old and almost 40 pounds. The last few days I have noticed he has been really slow and non-responsive.  He is normally a great eater, eating 3-5 pounds rabbits every couple weeks with no problem.  The last few times I have tried to feed him he has refused to eat.

Today when I got him out to clean his 6X3 vision cage, I noticed he wasn't sticking his tongue out and didn't look like he could. His head was flopping around and going in weird positions.  He can still move around but doesn't alot and it clear to me that something is wrong. I am quite concerned about him not being able to stick his tongue out.

About a month ago I dropped the ambient temperature in the cage from about 82 to the mid to upper 70's to help induce breeding between the two 10 footers.  Today when I noticed his strange behavior and movements, I added an extra heat lamp which will bring the ambient temperature back to low 80's.  The humidity range is constantly 40-70%, with it usually being 50-60%. I haven't noticed any coughing, sneezing, bubbles, etc.

Any ideas on what the problem is with specific suggestion I could do? I would rather not take him to the vet if there is something I can do.

Thanks! Brian

Answer
Burms can have MAJOR respiratory infections and not show signs.  I know I once took one out for a show and didn't know anything was wrong until an hour later when at the show it coughed up a half-gallon luggie!  What you've done already is about all you can do at home, if that doesn't work within 2-3 days you need antibiotics.  Further, if you get to the antibiotics stage go with Amikacin (sic), do not use Baytril on burms.  IMHO Baytril does not work especially on resp. infection.  It's good on colubrids but not boids.
