Red Tailed Boa & Ball Python

Question
I have had a ball python for almost a month now, yesterday i got a redtailed boa. They both are about 1 1/2ft in lenght.  So my question is can they live in the same cage?  The cage is about 5ft long, 2.5 ft wide, 3ft deep. I asked the lady yesterday when i got the boa, and she said they should be fine while they are young.

Answer
Hi Darrell
Yes...they can live together while they are young. Cage size for an adult is around 6-8 feet long, 2-3 feet wide, and 2-3 feet tall.  You will want to keep notes on how often each feeds (feed them seperately of course!) There is the risk of one snake dominating the other such that they are unable to carry out required functions (like moving to a warm basking area or drinking water). This can obviously cause some serious problems (including major stress), and you may not notice it until it's too late because this behavior can be very subtle. There are lots of things to consider, but the short answer is that it's best to keep each snake in its own cage, and in the long run it's usually easier for the keeper, too. You may be able to get away with having them together for a year or so, then as they eat more and grow bigger you'll want to get seperate cages.  Hope this helps and thanks for writing :-)
