Turtles mating

Question
I'm planning to get an aquarium and keeping a pair of male and female turtles there. I'm planning to get a 5 feet tank. Do you think the turtles will mate and lay eggs in the tank? I'll do the hatching part in an incubator.

Answer
Hi!!  I am not an expert in turtles.  My area of expertise deals with the uromastyx lizard.  I however do own to red eared slider turtles and keep them in a very large pond. Most turtles and reptiles (especially snakes), have a hard time adapting to captivity, and it is sometimes difficult to breed them in such conditions.  However, if you are highly skilled at taking care of your pets and give the animals a certain degree of freedom, they will think they are in the wild, and hibernate.  Most terrestrial turtles, like the box turtle, or the mud turtle, come out of hibernation between March and May, and it is about that time when they begin to mate. U need to create conditions that are similar to their natural habitat.  Look up the species of ur turtle and try to create a natural environment for them.  I hope this helps.  Good luck  Cathy
