anole anatomy

Question
QUESTION: I just would like to know what the inside of my anole looks like. He's male. I wonder if the little holes behind his eyes go right through into his insides. Also what they are for. How does he hear, does he have teeth (I can't seem to find any), does he have a spine, bones, blood, etc.  Please tell me anything about his inner anatomy that you know.
Thanks,
Rhonda

ANSWER: OK, he is a lot like us.  He has a complete internal skeleton just like you.  He has a heart and blood BUT his heart only has 3 chambers instead of four like yours.  His mix of organs is again very similar to ours (lungs, liver, kidneys, brain).  The holes are his ears and he has a tempanic membrane much like our eardrum.  What he does not have is the external cartilage on the outside of his head to help catch sound like we do.  He does have very small teeth or at least boney lumps along the jaw line (really small in anoles-which is why it does hurt very much when they bite).

QUESTION: How well does he hear and see? If I talk to him does he hear me well? (I know you said the lack of external cartilage makes him hear less well) Does he hear me if I whisper to him?
Also, are male anoles content living alone?
I'm feeding him one wax worm plus one small cricket on Thursdays, and Tues, Sat, and Sun 3 small crickets. Do you think this is a good diet for him?
He seems to like it when the temp is 90 degrees because he's green more at that temp. How long is it okay for him to be brown? Does the color of his surroundings have anything to do with his color?

Thank you,
Rhonda Stock

Answer
They hunt by sight so he can see very well.  He can hear you, thought probably not as well as your cat.  Reptiles perfer to be alone.  You could add a little more to his diet as they have a pretty fast metabolism.  As to color green is good, means the temp is good.  Make sure you provide UVB lighting in addition to heat, anole bask and therefore must have UVB.  I think temp more than anything affects color.
