Question
QUESTION: hey! I have a texas horned lizard, a female one. I am looking for a male texas one so they can mate, but the problem is I couldnt find one! so can a texas female horned lizard mate with another horned lizard kind (like the southern or the desert horned lizard) ?
thanks!

ANSWER:   It's always better to stay in species, so I think you should contact your nearest herpetological society about breeders of this species, or go to reptile shows in your state for a suitable mate.  Be aware he should get his own enclosure, females are just as territorial as males.

QUESTION: ok! I will have another one from the same species ( male+texas ). so the female one has to have her own cage, and the same for the male one?
can they be in the same cage?

ANSWER: In the wild they live apart, so I keep my breeders separate and they only meet on neutral ground for mating.  In their own enclosures they don't have to share basking spots or food.  There is no chance for any sort of intimidation.

QUESTION: ok I see! I have a baby texas horny toad! whats the best way to take care of her?

Answer
She will need a tank with nice rocks to bask on, a bright light to emit heat from above to 80-90 F.  No night light.  Babies should have frequent meals and for the Texas horned lizard that means bugs, especially harvester ants, as many as she can eat and she will eat a lot.  She should get a misting every day to get her water, and mist the rocks and tank walls for her to lap.  If you keep her outside she should have either a good linear fluorescent tube or a mercury vapor lamp for UVB.  Again, since it is a native species to the US, make sure it is legal to raise one in captivity in your area.
