Leo Diet

Question
Hi there, Aaron again. Your information is so helpful. Im trying to incorporate
more into my geckos diet. I bought some mealworms for her to start eating.
She gobbled one up, but there are still about 7 crickets left in her cage from
her feeding on Thursday. Should i take these old crickets out and buy a few
and replace a few with meal worms? Should i just leave the crickets in all
together? How do you suggest i incorporate more without damage or shock?
Again, please tell me about how to deal this time with these extra 4 day old
crickets and for the future. Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Aaron,
You don't want to leave the crickets in the tank with her as they may start to nibble on your leo.  I would remove the crickets to a container and gut load them(see the caresheet in previous emails on doing this)for a day or two.  Then try putting one or two in...if she doesn't chase them, try breaking the hind legs on the crickets to see if she will then eat them as they won't be able to hop.You can place a few in the dish with a few meal worms also, which she may then grab them to eat.
Some leos get set in what they will and will not eat. With the mealworms, as I said previously, best to feed the freshly shed ones which are the ones that are nice and white. Adding different foods to her diet won't shock her. She may refuse to eat for a few days as it will be a different food and leos hate change..she may taste the different foods a few times before she actually eats it. If she is of a good size you can also feed her the superworms, which are a better choice than the mealworms...do not get the so called giant mealworms as they are hormone induced to grow larger...not a food we want to put in out leos.
