Fat tailed gecko lost his entire tail

Question
My son's fat tailed gecko is 2 years old.  We came home from being away a few days to find the under side of the gecko's tail bleeding.  This morning we found his entire tail had fallen off during the night.  Is he ok?  What does this mean? What should we do?

Answer
OK, well unfortunately this means that the Gecko became injured in some way and that his tail will regrow but not look the same.  I would presume that there was something in the enclosure that he caught his tail on.  He will heal over time and you shouldn't medicate with anything but I would keep him on non-dyed white paper towels until heals which should be changed daily.  Other than that I would look inside the enclosure and see where he may have caught his tail. Most Geckos and some lizards are capable of automatically dropping their tails when under duress from a predator and this is common in the wild but occasionally happens in captivity as well.  I hope this helps and look forward to hearing how he heals.
