Question

lizard
There is a bump or abscess on the tail of my brown basilisk I'm not really sure what it is but it seems to be getting more swollen and looks like it has ruptured a little but it doesn't seem to bother him. What could it be, what can i do, and will it go away? He is full grown and I took him after my little nephew got bored with him I've had him for about six months and it wasn't there when I got him.

Answer
Hi Katie

It could be some type of either malignant or benign tumour, reptiles get those the same as other animals. I suspect that it may be an abscess which are fairly common in reptiles as well. They can pop-up even when there is no obvious entry wound or initial injury to supposedly cause it. Reptile pus forms as a semi-solid rather then as a liquid so abscesses are quite firm, hard and tumour-like. This also means that they don't tend to just drain and heal spontaneously the way they can sometimes do in mammals.
You can try applying a topical antibiotic suitable for human wounds but these do not tend to be absorbed very well and be very effective in these cases, it certainly won't hurt and could help somewhat. They often reach a certain size and then gradually shrink as the reptiles immune system gradually fights it. Fortunately the bulge is in a spot that should not interfere with his ability to move, hunt and eat. In the meantime just make sure his temperatures are adequate. The proper and full functioning of his immune system is very temperature dependent
It is a fairly simple procedure for a vet to lance and remove the pus. This is usually followed by a flushing out of the remaining cavity and a course of systemic antibiotics. You can tell the vet what your budget is and ask him/her  what treatment options fall within that. There is a link here that can help you find a reptile experience vet in your state.
