Question
I know this sounds stupid (and it is, given that the only females in the tank are green anoles), but what does an egg look like? I have just found a yellowish, soft oval ball in the viv, and it is about the size of your small finger nail. Is this an egg? And if so, why is it soft?

Thanks,
Vicky

Answer
Yes, that is an egg and they are soft for a while when laid The shell only partially hardens so it can swell as the embryo grows when it is fertilized.  Yellowed eggs are infertile and can be thrown out.  Many female repitles, including anoles will lay eggs without a male present, like chickens. Anoles usually lay more than one egg so look for others.  Watch those girls carefully, if one stops eating, it's time for the vet.  Reptiles can become egg bound if they don't lay them all.
