Question

my "kids"
hello, i think its a great thing you guys have goin with the Q&A here.......i have several enclosures housing several snakes including a dumeril boa, a redtail, an albino red tail,  albino ball, and pastel mojave ball python.

i have 75 gallon, and 125 gallon tanks for the time being before the large size of the boa's warrents the building of a custom enclosure, but my question is this.

where is the best position for a heat lamp or lamps to better maintain the minimal 75-79 degree cold side, 85-90 hot side and 90-95 degree bask zone.   ive had trouble  keeping all the temps in the correct ranges, or rather  co-ordinating them together.  if the hot side is correct, the cold side is to warm. and if the cold side is correct, the hot side is off.  for humidity control i do use a large towel on the the top to maintain moisture and in some ways it helps the temperatures be where they need to be, but im a little bit of a perfectionist, and id like it to be spot on.

are multiple lights with different wattage bulbs good, or just a single? and should i use something more than the towel? maybe something more solid?

and after that, how can i better maintain humidity in the 50-60% range with all the heating devices drying it out after 30mins of misting?

sorry for the ramble but i want you to know as much of my situation as possible, id like to add that i do use appropriate sized under tank heat pads on all my tanks. and they all have temp and humidity gauges.

thanks, chris

Answer
Experiment, experiment, experiment is about the best I can tell you.  The good news is all your kids are pretty forgiving.  Big water dishes help a lot w/ humidity.  Also, you may find as they get bigger and start taking up more and more space that heating the ROOM to the mid line temp rather than heating the cages is more effective.  That is how I do it.  And then if I have a species which still needs even more heat I'll add a heating pad.

If you are interested, I have (4) 4.5x3x1.5 foot Vision cages which I need to "rehome."  They would be perfect fits for all your boas and good breeding cages for the balls.  I believe they run close to $400 each new (plus shipping), I'd let all 4 go for $900.  I'm in FL, not sure where you are, but if you're close it might be something to consider...  Shoot me an email if they would work for you bnr.com@prodigy.net put "vision cages" in the subject line.

Thx, B
