Question
QUESTION: My gecko has a strange red growth coming from its , um, rectum. What could this be?It was bleeding earlier,do geckos get impacted anal glands?

ANSWER: Hello Misty,
Your leopard gecko has a prolapse.
It could have been caused by a heavy infestation of worms or parasites, an impaction from loose substrate, or straining when trying to go to the bathroom.
If you have him on loose substrate, take the substrate out & replace it with paper towels.
What you can do is get some sugar, roughly 1-2 tablespoons, & dissolve it in warm water, then add cool water.  Then soak him in the water.  It sometimes helps with swelling of the area.  Then try to get some ky jelly to keep the areas moist so it doesn't dry out & become necrotic.
You will most likely have to take him to the vet though, & get that taken care of & possibly get it amputated depending on what has prolapsed.  Does it look like rectal, intestinal, or hemepenal?

QUESTION: Im really not sure.I just purchased him yesterday, with this growth already in place.I really dont know much about geckos, and apparently the people at the pet store knew even less.....

Answer
Hello Misty,

Oh man I am sorry.  That is so horrible.
I am thinking that he probably has a terrible case of worms or parasites since he was from a petstore.  I do not understand why they did not get him vet care before selling him.
Have you tried the sugar soaking yet?
Actually, you should go back to the store demanding that they pay ALL of the vet bills FOR YOU!!
That is totally unacceptable that they would sell him in that condition.  Did you get a guarantee when you bought him?
