LEOPARD GECKO - ONE DIES, ONE SICK

Question
QUESTION: We have had 2 leopard geckos for almost 4 years now, we believe they are both female. One dies a few days ago and now we noticed that the surviving one is not hunting or eating or pooping.  Mostly it just sits in its lil cave.  I read one of your other posts from April of 2008 and I ordered both medicines from Beautiful Dragons the Pancur and Albium (I may be saying it wrong) and I am going to treat tonight with the pedialite & baby chicken and calcium powder.  I am just looking for some specific direction on the dosing for the medicines when they come in.  We want to do anything possible to save our Stripes!  I also heard that you can soak them in the pedialite???

ANSWER: Hello Carli,

The meds that you got, the Panacur which is for worms & the Albon which is for coccidia, will need to be carefully dosed.  When you get the meds in, let me know.  I will need your gecko's weight so I can make sure she is not overdosed.
The Panacur only needs to be given once weekly, while the Albon should be given for 7-12 days.  You have to be very careful with the Albon, as it is very harsh on their systems.
Did you get a fecal done on Stripes, or are you winging it?

You can soak them in pedialyte.  When you do, make sure it is non colored, because their skin can absorb some of the dyes from the coloring.  I would also try to get some extra oral fluids as well.  Did you get any probiotics as well?  Meds really mess up their gut flora in their tummy so probiotics help replace the natural bacteria that are destroyed with medication.  She may lose her appetite during the medication also.
Continue giving the baby food, pedialyte & calcium powder.
If you need probiotics, I sell some on my reptile supply site, also.

Let me know how she is doing.

QUESTION: She is 86 grams and we have both medicines. Should we just force the medicine or do we drop it on the nose?

Answer
Hello Carli,

Wow, she is good sized for a leopard gecko then.  At 86 grams, she will dosed at .086kg for proper dosage.  You are just treating one of them correct?
As far as the Panacur goes, just give .04ml once a week, for a total of 2-3 treatments depending on how you feel her progress is going.
For the Albon, I believe it is a 5% solution, give .08ml for a cycle of 7 days right now.  Since she is a small animal, I hesitate to medicate her for too long.  The Albon is harsh.

So, let's start with that & see how things go.  You can "attempt" to drip the medication onto her nose, but, I don't know how successful you will be.  She may not like the flavor & will refuse it.  So, you can try, but, if she wont take it you will need to get a swab to quickly get her mouth open & squirt it in carefully.  Keep her hydrated as well during this time.

Let me know how things are going.
