fence lizards

Question
Hi my question for you is that I have a pair of fence lizards and plan on keeping them. Since the weather is getting colder, I worry about their hibernation patterns. I know how to take care of them and all but I would like to know if I were to put them outside to hibernate, what should I do to make them feel comfortable?

Answer
Outside would depend on where you are.  There are fence lizards all over the US, plus other related species in parts of Europe and Asia.  If a lizard is going to brumate (hibernate) they will be happy to do it inside as well as outside.  If you have them in a tank indoors, just supply them with a cave and once they are staying in that cave, shut off the lights and let them be, maybe placing a shallow dish of fresh water every so often in case they want a drink.  Their metabloisms will be extremely slow so they won't eat and won't lose weight.
