Question -
i am curious to find out what my mum found.  she was out walking at our local golf course in the north east of scotland and came across a small snake type creature ( about 12" long).  it was also quite thin.  it looked like a snake! but the head part put doubt to that as it had a long nose.  we don't know if it lived in the grass or in the burns surrounding the course.  i would appreciate if you could tell me any thoughts towards this.  i hope this is enough info.  thanks.

Hey Liz,
i really do need some more information from you to take a more accrate try at identifiying this reptile for you.

1.what part of scottland ,name of town or county

2. color and or any type of pattern on body.

i know there are only a few species of snake in scotland and the adder is the only venomous one i believe. you also have a common grass snake out there, but please send me the answers to those two questions and i will get back to you as to what a believe it may be.

         thanks

thank you very much for the reply.  to answer your questions, 1. it was found in carnoustie, angus, 2. it looked as though it would of been brown but not too sure about any pattern.  as i said before it was the nose/head part that made us doubt that it was a snake - but obviously i'm no expert.  i thought all heads were rounded on snakes. thanks again.  i hope that this will help you a little more.

Hey Liz,

Four species of reptile are native to Scotland: adder (Vipera berus), common lizard (Lacerta vivipara), slow worm (Anguis fragilis) and grass snake (Natrix natrix). The grass snake all though is rarely reported or seen in Scotland. im almost one hundred percent that the snake you saw was the worm snake it has a longer head and nose than most snakes, it is non-venomous and all of your snakes and lizards are protected by your countries wild life preservation group. well i hope this was helpful feel free to ask any more questions you may have.

         thanks for the ?

hi again tommy

just an up date on my queery.

it has turned out to be a pipe fish and not a type of snake at all.  i took it up to my local zoo.  i would never of thought it was a fish in a month of sundays.  thank you anyway for your replies.
