Question
QUESTION: I just bought this guy (stu) a few months ago and once in a while he coughs only in the am. Is this normal?

ANSWER: Hello Bon,

Could you review his tank setup with me?
What are the temperatures in his tank?  Do you use a digital probe or a temp gun to measure the temperatures?
He really shouldn't be coughing at all though.  Have you noticed any mucous in his mouth or nose?  How is he eating right now?
What type of substrate do you use, sand, paper towels, tiles?

Do you have any pictures of him?

QUESTION: Hi Tracie,
Stu has a 44 gallon tank, play sand on the bottom, I have a strip for a temp gauge (came with him). No coughing today. :)  Stu eats crickets, collard greens, and a pinkie for a treat. Just once a week on the pinkie. Also eats super worms, meal worms. Some days he eats very well, some days he's picky. I have pics. I am not sure but i think he may have had tail rot. I never got an explanation for what happened to his tail.

Answer
Hello Bon,

That is great you didn't hear any coughing today!  :-))
Well, tail rot can be caused by an initial tail nip from a tank mate, an injury such as closing it in a door of an enclosure or retained shed.
Do you know an approximate age of him?
He looks like an adult.  I would keep his feeder consumption to 50 or under.  The pinkie should only really be fed once a month to avoid him getting too much fat.
Stu looks good, based on what I can see in his picture.  You could send a few more, if you would like, so I can see his physical makeup better.
The UVB light, which brand of tube bulb is it?
The placement of his lights looks fine.  The thermometer, is it a stick on type though?
Do you use supplementation such as calcium several times per week?
