Feeding Dumpy White

Question
I have a question about feeding a Dumpy White Tree Frog.  We know not to just put the crickets in and leave them (learned the hard way that they bite!)  We now put one cricket in at time and make sure she (Zelda) eats it before putting another in.  It is so cool to watch Zelda, she is a very good hunter.  The instant you put a cricket in she becomes alert, will turn to watch it and then stalk it and pounce, much like a cat.  We continue putting crickets in one at a time (she will usually eat 3 or 4.)  If she doesn't eat the cricket we take it out.  My question is, what if the cricket buries itself under the moss and I can't find it to take it out?  Will she most likely eat it when it comes out or should I put a piece of potato in there, or should I continue to search for the cricket?

Answer
Hi Kathy, I always like to leave a bit of food in enclosures for crickets. It serves two purposes, it prevents the crickets from biting the reptile (or amphibian) which, as you learned, they will do when no other source of food is available. It also serves as a gut-load, making sure the cricket is still nutritionally beneficial to Zelda when she does hunt it down. Potato isn't much more then starch and water. I would suggest something like a piece of romaine lettuce or a small amount of shredded carrot instead. I like to hide a small bottle cap with crushed cereal, like cheerios, or flaked fish food in the enclosure as well. If you do that then you certainly won't have to worry about the few crickets that may remain in the enclosure and your frog can hunt them down at a more natural pace.
