Question
Recently moved to Mauriceville, Orange County in southeast texas.
I really need to know the different types of snakes that are "normal" to hang around this area.  We have been visited by what someone said is a "chicken snake" and a rattle snake...what else can I look forward to receiving a visit from in this area...and do you recommend anything to do to keep them away....Thank Linda

Answer
YOU moved into THEIR habitat...  Now's not a good time to develop a fear of the local fauna.  Get yourself a book which contains info and pictures of the snakes of the SW and learn which ones to avoid.  I'd recommend The Audubon Society Field Guide to N. American Reptiles and Amphibians.  NO snake wants to come into contact w/ you.  Give them the room and they will leave you alone.
