toad behavior

Question
On my walk tonight, I met an American(?) toad on the sidewalk. When I touched its back to encourage it to move to a safer (greener) area, it hunkered down. That seemed to be a normal response, but when I touched its side, it leaned right into my hand, as a cat would. When I moved my hand to its other side, it again leaned tight into my hand. It seemed to enjoy being rubbed. Do you have an explanation for this behavior? I've never met a "friendly" toad before. Was I scratching an itch? Did it need a back rub? Was it marking my hand as part of its territory? Thanks.
