Question
Hi I have a baby shingleback lizard that I bought from a breeder that keeps them in a outdoor pit and I noticed that my little guy had a red bug running on his back. What is it? and what should I do? Im from australia if that makes a difference

Answer
Hi Dylan,
If it is mites, there will be a lot more than one...Mites come in a variety of colors..brown, black and red, although generally not a bright red.  If it is indeed mites, I suggest treating the area and also your lizard with a product called "Reptile Relief" made by the company "NATURAL CHEMISTRY". Be sure to read the directions and follow.  The product is non toxic and extremely safe when used as directed of course.  It does not contain any harsh chemicals.
If you are able to bathed your lizard, again, if it is mites you will see the mites "run" to any part that isn't in the water and in most cases, you will see some red tint to the water from the blood from the mites.  You can also wipe your lizard with a wet white cloth to see if you get any red on the cloth which can also confirm mites.  Mites are very very tiny..almost impossible to see so if you are seeing something much larger, then hopefully it isn't mites.
