Question
we just got a pair of leopard geckos and one of them seems to have swelling around the vent area. It was not like that when we go it. the gecko that has the swelling angles himself to where his vent area is facing up towards the lighting. is this normal. they are eating normally.

Answer
Hi Renee,
Were these leos kept on sand by any chance? (sand or any loose substrate should never be used for leos) Swelling in that are can mean that he is a bit constipated from eating sand or even from having internal parasites. You can try soaking him in a warm, shallow pan of water to see if that helps him go.  I do suggest a vet visit for a fecal check and also to rule out any possible blockage in the workings.
Depending on the age and of course if a male, it can also be a build up of semen. For this a vet is also needed to express it properly. If thats the case, the vet may show you how to do it if it happens again.  The warm soak may help open that area up. The risk of not doing anything if it is a build up is that it can easily become infected.
