Leopard Geckos Tail Split into 2 pieces!

Question
Hi,
My girlfriend owns a yr and a half old leopard gecko.
The other day, somehow the cat managed to extract the gecko
from its cage, and my girlfriend heard a high pitched
squealing. My first question is: Is the squealing normal
behaviour?
By the time my girlfriend had got into the room and removed
the cat, the gecko was motionless on the floor next to its
tail, which had come off. The strange thing i noticed about
this when i came to remove the tail was it had come off in
two pieces, a large tail piece, and a small piece that i can
only assume had come off from the base of the tail near the
gecko's hind legs. Is the tail meant to split into two
pieces like this?
The gecko was alive and I need some advice on the best way
to treat her.

Answer
Hi Damon,
The cat may have grabbed the tail in an odd spot, causing it to break and then the leos natural ability to drop their tail may have caused the 2nd break at the same time, or visa verse.
As to what to do....
If you are using sand or other loose substrate in the tank, (none should ever be used due to blockage dangers) remove it and use paper towels.  If there is sand or other debris in the exposed tissue, wash it with a diluted betadine (water and betadine to the color of a weak tea) or use sterile saline solution(like for contact lens wearers) to remove any debris.  You can apply an antibiotic ointment such as plain Neosporin to it.  Nature will heal it...of course if you notice that there is drainage, especially infection looking drainage, or if the end does not start to heal, then a vet is needed.
Since they store all of their fat in their tails, its important that they get fed very well.  Be sure to gut load all insects with a veggies, fruits, greens prior to feeding to the leo.  Also, increase the times you use a vitamin powder to 2-3 times a week.  Be sure to keep a very clean environment.
