Question
Hello! I'm Kiana and I have been looking for a lizard for quite some time now. I was wondering if you can tell me which one is good for me. I want one that you can handle often but not huge either. And that doesn't need a VERY expensive tank. Have any suggestions? E-mail me back!! :)

Answer
Hi Kiana,
With not wanting anything that would be expensive in housing, that would include any that require hot temperatures and special uvb needs?   If yes...then you are limited to species.  Also, are you willing to feed a variety of insects?  Will you be able to afford to take the lizard to a vet if it would become ill..and also once a year for a fecal check for internal parasites?  All silly things(but much needed to consider) before getting a lizard.
For a low cost lizard, that can live in a 20 gallon tank, is not large, but...does not always like to be handled is a leopard gecko.  They eat only insects and are nocturnal..so they don't really require uvb..but they do require an area in their tank that has a temperature of 88-92 degrees.  There is much more care they require..if you are interested, let me know.
Another species is the crested gecko...they require a cage that is a bit higher, in addition to insects they also eat some fruits/babyfoods and tolerate handling better in most cases. I do suggest providing uvb for a crested.  This can cost about 40$ to start out for a light and fixture..with the light needing replaced about every 9 months.

Some other species you might want to look at that do require larger tanks, higher temperatures, and uvb are the Bearded Dragon, and the Uromastyx.  If you would like more info on any of the species, please let me know.
Beardies and the Uromastyx both are generally good with handling..the bearded dragon eats a variety of insects and also greens/veggies... the Uro eats greens/veggies.  Both are generally well under two feet total length.  Here are some links on the two species.
