Getting a new leo

Question
Diane,Please disregard the last question I sent you. After watching some videos and care sheets on bearded dragons I dont think that breed would be a good choice for me.  So im going to stick with a leo since Ive taken care of them and know about them =)

Ive been reading more care guides to see if I did anything wrong with my leo that just passed.

I read that they dont need any light what so ever. Is this true? I always had a little 15 watt house bulb to help with a basking light, even though my leo always stayed in the shade. Is this ok?

Also I talked to another expert saying that I could use a UVB bulb even though they dont need it,it could still help them. What do you suggest on that, should I go head and keep the UVB light in there?

Thank you for all you help once again.

Answer
Hi Taylor,
You may want to look at the crested geckos.  They are almost the same as the leos, carewise..but actually will eat a prepared food for cresties, insects and babyfood.  This can make it easier on having food available for them.  They also are more social than the leos and tolerate handling more than a leo.
As to not needing light... unless something lives in the deep bowels of a cave without ever leaving it, they do need and get light.  I always provide a low uvb light for the leos, snake and any other nocturnal critter.
Even shaded, a lizard is getting light when it is available.  Light should always be provided and as I said, I've always provided some uvb... uvb/uva is basically needed by almost all living creatures to help with vitamin D3 in some way.  Many refer to it as "part of a natural diet".
I would keep the uvb light regardless if you decide to get another leo or to check out the cresties.
On the cresties, they do climb a bit more than the leos, so the higher cage you have would be perfect for one.  Temperature wise, they require about the same as the leos with basking temperatures, etc...  Actually, I've been hoping that a crestie becomes available through our rescue which I will most likely keep.
