Leopard Gecko abscess?

Question
HI! My son has a 2-3 yr old leopard gecko and we just noticed a soft swelling with a red tint below the skin, surrounding her right eye.  I'm assuming it is an abscess and I will try to drain it as you recommended to another person who submitted a similar question.  I am a veterinarian, however I only work on dogs, cats, horses and cows, so I am unfamiliar with dosage of Baytril for geckos....could you help me out there?  I'm not sure how much she weighs, but I do have a food scale which could work for that.  If you can tell me the dosage in mg/kg or mg/oz body weight, I can figure the dosage in mLs.  Also, can it be given orally or must it be injected?

Thank you for your expertise and helping out an ignorant gecko owner! LOL!

Answer
Hello Kerry,

Great!  Well, I am going to try to find a way to go to vet school in a few years.  My master's degree is in sports medicine/physiology.  I want to specialize in Reptiles.
Reptiles need more vets like you working hard for them!  Thanks for helping your son's little gecko.  You are far from an ignorant gecko owner!  :-))  You are extending your field of knowledge, something I wish that more vets would try to do.  Your gecko is lucky to have you helping her out!  That is excellent.
Yes, I would recommend aspirating some fluid from that area, to test in order to determine whether or not there is infection or not.  Are crickets left in the tank overnight with him?  If so, crickets can bite which will cause sores that can get infected.
The dose for most reptile species is 5mg/kg for "routine" infections & 10mg/kg for "stubborn" infections or other ailments deemed necessary for treatment that did not respond with the lower dose.
The best plan of treatment & length is 7-12 days, but no longer than 21 days.  It is nephrotoxic especially on reptiles, so care is needed when using it.
What concentration/strength were you going to mix the Baytril up?  The normal solutions usually are 2.5%, 5% or a 10% solution.  It tastes terrible, so flavoring it might be helpful if giving it orally.  It can be given orally or intra-muscularly.

Let me know how she is doing!  Yes, a food scale should work just fine.  She will probably weigh anywhere between 40-80 grams.

Good luck!
