Question

Mohinder
I've had my leopard gecko for almost 4 months and he has only eaten once
since I got him. He didn't lose any weight for a very long time, but in the last
week or so I've noticed his tail becoming thinner. I would like to do what I can
to help him make it. He was just a baby when I got him (I'm not sure how old)
and he hasn't grown any at all in this time. I have never seen him out of his
hiding spot unless I get him out. I don't really have a lot of money to take
him to the vet and would like to avoid that if at all possible. At first I thought
he was hibernating, but when he started to lose weight I got worried. Any
suggestions?

Answer
I was on vacation when this was asked, but had I not been I would have responded promptly. "if at all possible" you want to "avoid" the vet? Honestly, the best thing for this gecko is that you surrender it to a qualified herp enthusiast or rescue group before you kill it, if it isn't already dead. He is starving to death over these weeks while you do nothing, and are trying to avoid the very thing that might save him.

People who can't afford vets, can't afford pets. That's just bottom line, and you should do what is best for him, regardless of what it may or may not cost you. You are responsible for his life. An animal's life and welfare should not be left to a whim about whether you will have him medically treated when he is clearly dying! You should be glad that you don't have to rely on him to take you to the hospital if something happened.
