How offen should I feed?

Question
Hello I just got a leopard gecko and the previous owners said they fed him everyother week 15 crickets. Dose that sound right? I don't want to over feed him or under feed him. He is about 6 and 1/2 inches and very friendly. Plus he lives in the same tank as a greek tortosie so is it okay if I put the dish of calicium for the gecko with the turtle in there? I don't want the turtle to get sick. The previous owners said they have been living together for over a year with no problems.

Answer
Hi Keasha, the two animals should not be housed together, it can be dangerous and is an obvious signal that they are not being setup correctly. They require different temperatures, different setups, and their own space most importantly. Greek Tortoises need an enclosure of at least 4ft long, 2 ft wide and 1-2 feet deep. And a Leopard Gecko needs at least a 10 gallon tank. No tto mention that a Tortoise such as this one needs a screen enclosure to allow more air circulation, while the gecko needs an actual tank.

It is not safe for the two to be in the same enclosure.

As for feeding him. Every other week is definately not enough. He should be eating every day at that age. Every day as many crickets as he can eat in 15 minutes. If he can eat 22 crickets in a sitting then thats what he needs, if he only eats 8 thats fine too. The crickets should be no bigger then the space between his eyes. Any crickets left in the tank after the 15 minutes need to be removed.

Good luck,
Yexalen
