Whites Tree Frogs - Food

Question
Hi, I have been feeding my White's Tree Frog crickets, about 2 every day, but he
hasn't been eating them.  I think this is probably because he is nocturnal and so
he would be eating them at night...if he could see them; it is too dark I think.
However, when I turned on a light, he froze like a dear in headlights.  He lives in
a 10 gallon tank.  HOW can I feed him?  Thanks

Answer
Hi Brian, I'm not sure from your question how long you have had your White's but I'm guessing that he might be new. If he is recently acquired then you need to know that reptiles and amphibians often do not eat very well (or at all) for the first one or two weeks after they have been re-located. It just takes them a little while to settle down and feel comfortable in a new environment. The shorter days and the cooler temperatures of the season will also cause their appetites to diminish. White's enter a period of dormancy in the cooler months in their native area.
White's are naturally nocturnal so they are well equipped to deal with the darkness, you don't need to worry about that. They are also good feeders and often get overweight in captivity. They are not the most agile or graceful hunters. They will usually just sit and wait for a cricket to wander by and then lunge at it. If your tank has a lot of plants or other furnishings that allow the crickets to hide then you might just try adding a few more (around 5) to give him a better shot at one. Remove the uneaten ones or just leave a capful of cricket food in the enclosure for the crickets to feed on.
