Mourning Gecko

Question
QUESTION: Hey,

I noticed yesterday that all of the sudden one of the two mourning geckos I have cannot walk around anymore. She seems to no longer have control of her legs and moves by flopping around. She seems like she's a healthy weight and that none of her legs are broken since she can keep them in different positions, though I do notice that she can's control one every now and then. The other gecko is fine and is still climbing though she is staying close to the injuried one. I was wondering what could have possibly happened since this happened less than 24 hours ago and she's too little to take to the vet.

Thank you

ANSWER: Hi, Veronica,
Can you tell me more about how you're keeping them, and what they are eating, including supplements?

It sounds like your gecko has a spinal injury.  This could be due to a simple accident, or, there are some deficiencies that can cause bones to become weak and brittle.  (Hypocalcemia, due to lack of calcium or vitamin D3).  If the spine is not injured, then severe hypocalcemia can also cause loss of control of the hind limbs.

A vet would only provide supportive care and supplements, if needed.  I do recommend separating her from the other gecko, if at all possible.  Visible disability makes an animal a target, and the uninjured gecko may pick on her.

QUESTION: She seems to be climbing again though she tends to do it a lot less now. She gets crested gecko food supplement and crickets. I am going to just keep an eye on her for now. Thank you :)

Answer
Veronica,
Be sure to calcium-dust all crickets, as they are extremely high in phosphorus.  The CGD, of course, is balanced.
Hopefully she had a minor injury, and it was inflamed, and now that the swelling is going down, she's getting mobility back.  Temporary paralysis sometimes happens with back injuries.
