Leopard gecko heat

Question
Hi I'm planning on getting my first pair of leo's next week! I have the tank all set up but I'm having a problem with the heat! I have an under tank heater, and  a 50 watt black night heat bulb! When I plugged it all in it didn't get hot enough so I put on a 25 watt moonglO bulb as well jut to see what the temp did, and it is still only saying 86 degrees on the hot side! Is this enough heat? I have two thermometers a dial type ( which I found out stink) and a household digital and they both are about the same temp dial(80) and digital (86) I have the digital sitting on the floor though! My tank is a 20 gal high! Should I get a different bulb?

Answer
Hello Anita,

I would first get a digital probe or a temp gun first to make sure the temps are good.  That sounds like enough wattage to me, in combination with the undertank heater.
Though the black night bulbs tend not to get too terribly hot though.
You could try using a regular basking bulb instead, they put off more heat.  Try that to see if the temperatures change any.
The dial thermometers are not good, that is for sure.  They are not accurate & are about as bad as the stick on types.

Let me know how that goes.
