Question
hello,
we recently purchased an AFT for my daughter.  I've read lots and think i have a good set up, but my questions are more about what to expect from our little lizard.  we brought her home last Saturday, and she didn't eat on Saturday, but ate two crickets on Sunday, two on monday, at least one or two on tuesday, none on wednesday, and then on last night. i try to dust or sprinkle them with calcium but had forgotten the first nights. I don't see her out at all during day, which i would expect.  I don't see her out much at night either, which is what worries me.  She seems to have a hard time staying awake when i rouse her at night to feed her.  I usually wait until about 8 pm or so.  I've heard AFT's aren't very active, but it's almost like she is narcoleptic....for example last night she didn't really stay alert enough to eat her second cricket and starting dozing where she was without going to her hide.  I haven't seen her drink water when she is out to eat, and i haven't seen any poop either.
I have her on eco-earth - is this safe?  i do have an UTH but it is the one that came with the kit and i don't think it is doing much.  I did get a Powersun UVB light that i turn on for 10 or fifteen minutes at a time since it is a 100 watt.  Should i turn it on when she is out at night?  if i turn it on during the day and she is in her hide, does that benefit her?
I have a moist hide and a hot side hide although i am having trouble keeping the cool side cool since it is a small tank (10 gallon).
I'm wondering how long it will take her to feel ok with her new home and even though every lizard is different, how to know if she isn't feeling good since they are generally pretty inactive anyway.

Answer
Hello Vanessa,

It can sometimes take a couple of weeks for them to settle into their new home.
Great, the undertank heater is fine, do you leave that on 24/7?
The powersun is too powerful for that size of a tank.  I would use just a regular household light bulb for a basking light as it wont be as powerful.  If you would like to use a UVB you could get the Reptisun 5 or 10 tube bulb & use it with the basking light.
You may need to decrease the wattage to a 60 or 75 wattage.  The 10 gallon tank is hard to keep the temperatures steady.
The temperatures only need to be 88-90 on the warm side with a cooler end of around 78-82 on the cool end.
The calcium can be used 3-4 times per week.  You can also put in a dish of calcium powder in the tank for her to lick when she would like more.
They don't always come out a lot during the day & tend to become more active around dusk/evening.

It sounds like she is just having a little trouble adjusting.  Will she let you handle her?
Be sure to not leave crickets in her tank alone too long as they can bite her.

Let me know how she is doing.  Do you have any pictures of her?
