Uvb and supplements?

Question
Hello,

I currently use a 5.0 reptiglo flourecent tube. Is that a good enough to prevent MBD? I have a baby bearded dragon.
Also, I'm interested in buying T Rex Bearded Dragon Calcium Plus; Iv'e heard it's the best supplement, and it is all in one (Vitamins + calcium) AND it is specially made for beardies.Is that so? If not, what are the best supplements I can give her?

I'm also intereted in Exo Terra 160 Watt Solar Glo Bulb. Description is :

* Optimal levels of UVB, UVA, visual light and heat in one bulb
* Self-ballasted mercury vapor bulb
* Provides the benefits of natural sunlight
* Helps prevent metabolic bone disease

So is it a good choice?

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hello Sarah,

Great questions.
First, the Reptiglo 5 tube bulb is a very weak UVB source.  It is fine for adding extra brightness to the tank, but wont give much UVB exposure & will not prevent metabolic bone disease.

If your tank is at least a 40 gallon, you can get the Solar Glo mercury vapor bulb, but I would recommend getting the 125 watt.  If your tank is larger than a 75 gallon, & you can have a distance of at least 16 inches from the 160 watt bulb, then you can get the 160 watt.  The 125 watt has a required distance of 12 or so inches.

The best way to supplement a baby bearded dragon is to purchase calcium & vitamins separately.  The problem with buying a supplement mix with calcium & vitamins in it, is that a lot of times they don't get enough calcium & end up getting too much vitamins.
If you can get the Repcal calcium, Calypso calcium or Miner-All which any of them are just straight calcium powders, that would be the best.  Good choices for vitamin supplements are Herptivite, Vita-All or Nutrabol.
