red-eared sliders in the pool

Question
I have a red-eared slider turtle (approx. 5 inches).  He
was in a habitat and escaped.  Gone for several weeks.
Just re-appeared swimming in our in-ground chlorinated
swimming pool.  I have two questions.  First, are we at
risk for salmonella?  Will we need to empty the pool?
Second, I assume it's dangerous for the turtle to be in
chlorinated water, right?

Answer
I am NOT a medical professional but I would THINK that normal chlorine levels would be enough to take care of any bacteria your turtle might have introduced.  Maybe give it a good shocking just to be sure.  And yes, long exposure to that much chlorine would be bad for the turt.
