QuestionI have two young iguanas and a 7 year old or so ornate box turtle. At lots of pet stores i see them housed together. Is this ok? they get along fine outside of their cages.
AnswerHi Amanda, It is not just inter-species aggression that has to be considered when co-habitating different species. They will also be far more exposed to each others droppings if housed together and there is a risk that the normal flora in the stool of one species may prove pathogenic for another. This is especially true for species that will share a water source and tend to defecate in the water. Pet stores will often co-habitate inappropriate species due to space limitations or out of ignorance. They are often not the best examples of proper reptile husbandry.
