Crested Gecko Care Question

Question
Hello Diane,
I just bought my crested gecko, and I just wanted to be sure of some things on this first day.  Just so you know I have researched and know all the proper care requirements, however i wanted to ask your opinion on something different.  It is not really efficient for me to keep/buy live crickets (they are noisy and i cannot leave them outside), and i've seen these canned crickets in pet stores... same with mealworms... are these okay? i bought a can but my gecko doesnt seem to want them, the only thing he has eaten so far is some baby food.. I just want to make sure he just needs some time to settle in, or do i need to buy some live crickets regardless? Also, is it okay to feed them in the day time, or should i wait until evening? all the manuals say feed them about 5 times a week when they are young (mine is about 3 inches with tail) is that once a day five times a week? Thank you! (Ps. you are one of the reasons i got a crested, i dont know if u remember but i wrote a while back asking about different possible lizards, thanks again)

Answer
Hi Robert!!  Of course I remember!! Anyone that puts the time and effort to researching before they go out and buy a reptile sticks in my mind!!

Congrats!!!  I'm sooo glad I was able to help you out!!
I really don't recommend the canned insects....most reptiles won't touch them.
You say the crix are noisy...which leads me to believe you may be trying to feed too large of crickets...make sure you are using ones that are no larger in size than 1/2 to 1/3  the space between your crested's eyes...  If they are too large he will ignore them..and they can also cause blockages.
I would feed him daily...he is a baby and they need all the nutrition they can get... allow him to eat as many crickets as he will in about 15 minutes.  With a young one..if he is out and moving during the day, you can offer crix then, and also in the evening...
Personally...I like feeding the geckos daily...unless of course they have no interest in eating daily...and to keep an eye on them becoming over weight!!
Depending on where you are located, there are several on line stores that do sell smaller amts of crickets, silkworms, trevo worms, etc.
Young crickets don't make noise usually...its the larger ones that can drive ya nuts!! You would be surprised how fast you do become used to their noise though!
One trick is to order a size or two down on the size...and by the time you are using up those crix..you are due for more... many places sell them in lots of 250 or less...
Do get live correctly sized crickets or silk worms... and I think this will make a major difference in how he eats..don't forget the need to "gut load" the insects first!!
If you tell me what state you live in, I can try to find a supplier for insects on line for you!!
I would love to see a pic of your crested!! You can send it to me at Diane@scalesandtails.org also, feel free to contact me at that addy.
Again, congrats on your gecko!!!
