Male Beardeds Tail Fell Off

Hi my 3 year old male bearded dragons tail fell off last night. I put him in a bath and when I looked in on him a few minutes later it was floating in the water. He has a bloody stump now and unfortunatly there is no reptile vetrinarian close. Is there something I can use to guarentee it does not get infected and heals well. ? Thanks Keeshah

Hi Keeshah,

Any of the various topical antibiotic ointments that you can get at drug stores like Polysporin, Neosporin or Betadine ointment can be applied to the area. Avoid Hydrogen peroxide though as it can impede the healing process. I would also advise housing him on newspaper until the area heals over to avoid any substrate clinging to the wound and possibly causing infection.
